Bridging a Wifi access point to a VPN connection

I have a computer running Debian that I would like to use as a wireless access point for sharing that computer's ethernet internet VPN connection.

I can setup my openvpn based VPN software on my Debian machine and it runs, having the VPN as an extra interface vpn0 in ifconfig.

Then I try to setup the machine as a bridge/wireless access point for other machines to join to share the VPN connection.

Here I can make the bridge work so that other devices can connect to the internet through it, however the bridge does not use the VPN. Also when I get my bridge up and running I cannot access the internet from the machine running the bridge - only from other devices connecting to the internet through the machine.

I can add the bridge to the ethernet card by running sudo addif br0 eth0 But if I run sudo addif br0 vpn0 I get the error message

Can't add vpn0 to br0: Invalid argument

So how do I bridge my VPN connection to my wifi access point? And how do I access the Internet from my bridge machine itself?
